BURRILLVILLE – Just months after purchasing a Connecticut property previously owned by Ed and Lorraine Warren with comedian Matt Rife, a popular YouTube star has purchased the underlying mortgage on Burrillville’s most famous paranormal attraction.
Elton Castee bought the debt note for 1677 Round Top Road, known as The Conjuring House, under the name of his real estate holdings company, Summit & Stone LLC. The previous mortgage holder, Needham Bank, filed a discharge with the Burrillville Town Clerk’s office on Thursday, Nov. 13.
While it remains unclear how the mortgage acquisition will affect the future of the Burrillville property, made famous by the 2013 hit horror film The Conjuring, Castee and business partner Rife have publicly stated that they hope to own the house, which in recent years has become a destination for paranormal enthusiasts from across the globe.
Jacqueline Nuñez, who purchased the property from previous owners Cory and Jennifer Heinzen for $1.5 million in 2022, has reportedly fallen behind on the mortgage payments following the business’s closure last year. Needham Bank issued the $1.2 million loan to Bale Fire LLC in May of 2022, a company owned by Nuñez.
The house, operated as a business catering to ghost tourists in recent years, was originally scheduled to be sold at an auction on Halloween, but the event was cancelled following news that Needham Bank was no longer holder of the note.
At the time, it was unclear who had purchased the obligation.
Documents filed last week show the debt was assigned to Summit & Stone, an LLC registered with the state of Rhode Island in September by Castee.
A content creator known for his paranormal and travel content, Castee purchased a museum in Connecticut full of allegedly haunted artifacts once owned by the Warrens with friend Rife in August. Rife, who bought a home in neighboring North Smithfield last year, has said that owning the allegedly haunted Burrillville property was a longtime dream of his.
News of the new mortgage holder comes even as another well-known figure in the paranormal community, Jason Hawes, has raised nearly $315,000 to purchase the property.
This week, Hawes, the star of Syfy’s “Ghost Hunters,” published what he said would be the final update and push in the fundraising campaign, stating that the next two weeks are critical in the effort. He was asked to step in to save the property by previous occupant Andrea Perron, and said over the weekend that the final fundraising push will be followed by a series of “other announcements.”
“There’s been so much going on behind the scenes,” Hawes said in the video update. “I wish I could tell you all right now, but I can’t. I look forward to filling you all in on everything that’s gone on. It will mind blowing for everybody. Trust me.”
Hawes has said he will refund the donations to those who want the money back if he is ultimately unable to purchase the house.
