From Jason Doris, Storm Team 10 Meteorologist:
A Storm Team 10 Weather Alert is in effect as the region experiences dangerously cold wind chills, followed by our snowstorm on Sunday/Monday. Much of the area is in the low single digits by this morning, but with the wind, it’ll feel more like -10 to -20. Only minor improvements in the wind chill by this afternoon, so it might feel like a balmy zero degrees. The actual ambient air temperature will be in the low and mid 10s. If Providence only warms to 15 degrees for a high temperature, today will be the coldest afternoon since 2019! All of this cold air sets the stage for Sunday…our snowstorm.
A Winter Storm Warning has been posted for all of Southern New England due to high confidence in significant snowfall. Storm Team 10 also has higher confidence that sleet plays a role in this system, keeping snowfall totals capped at the coastline after the initial front-end thumping. It all starts on Sunday when snow develops from southwest to northeast between 10 AM and 1 PM. Snow quickly intensifies, with the potential of 2 inches per hour starting after 3 PM. Sleet could mix in at the south coast starting around 7 PM. At this point, there is likely 8-12″ of snow on the ground. Heavy snow continues to dump for interior locations, with the final tally close to 12-18″. The worst of the storm is over by midnight, but scattered light snow showers continue into Monday morning. There is still a bit of uncertainty with wrap-around on the backside as this storm pulls away, which could lead to a few more inches.
Saturday: Mostly sunny and very cold. Wind chills -10 to -20 early. High: 15
Sunday: Bitter start. Snow develops in the afternoon, turning heavier late. High: 20
Monday: Snow showers linger. High: 31
Tuesday: Mostly sunny. High: 19
Wednesday: Mix of sun and clouds. High: 20
Thursday: Mostly cloudy. High: 19
Friday: Mostly cloudy skies. High: 21
