School vacation
Holiday break for North Smithfield students will held from Wednesday, Dec. 24 through Friday, Jan. 2, and school officials note at the high school, many families will dismiss students after the holiday concert on Tuesday, Dec. 23. Parents are asked to submit early dismissal notices by today, Monday, Dec. 22.
North Smithfield Library will host several programs for vacation week with more information and registration found here.
Holiday changes
Town Hall will be closed on Wednesday, Dec. 24 and Thursday, Dec. 25 in celebration of the Christmas holiday. There will be no trash or recycling pickup on Thursday and collection will be delayed one day for the remainder of the week.

Special election voting
Town Clerk Joanne Buttie is notifying residents that the last date to register to be eligible to vote in the special election scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 3 is Sunday, Jan. 4. Voter registration forms will be made available in the lobby of the North Smithfield Police Station at 575 Smithfield Road for new voter registrations, and to correct names and addresses of registered voters.
Residents can also visit vote.sos.ri.gov to update or check the status of their voter registration, view a sample ballot once available, complete an application for a mail ballot, or locate an official election drop box in Rhode Island.

Mail ballot applications, once avaliable, may be completed at vote.sos.ri.gov or at the Clerk’s Office at North Smithfield Town Hall at 83 Greene St. The deadline to complete a mail ballot application is Tuesday, Jan. 13. Mail ballots may be placed in the official election drop box outside of town hall no later than 8 p.m. on February 3.
Registered voters in North Smithfield can vote early at town hall starting on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026, through Monday, Feb. 2 – excluding January 19 as it is a holiday and Town Hall is closed – during the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Friday.
Any voter who has requested a mail ballot and presents themselves at the polling location will be required to cast a provisional ballot.

New officers
The North Smithfield Police Department recently added two new officers following their graduation from the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy 2025-2 class 145. Officer Jackson Coutts and Officer Kristen Sullivan were sworn in by Town Administrator Scott Gibbs and Police Chief Tim Lafferty.
The department welcomed the new recruits to North Smithfield.

Town meetings
There were no town meetings in North Smithfield registered with the Secretary of State for this week as of Monday, Dec. 22.
