NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — The Newport Police Department said it is warning residents of a phone scam.

Police said the scammer will pretend to be a member of the Newport Police Department and claim that the recipient of the call had missed jury duty and owes a fine.

Newport police said anyone who receives a scam call should “not engage or provide any personal information.”
