PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WHDH) – Crews in Rhode Island are starting work to repair the failing Washington Bridge, which closed unexpectedly Monday evening.
The Rhode Island Division of Transportation mentioned they discovered eight of the ten pins that maintain the bridge in place had been snapped, with giant gaps left in beams because of this.
Officers mentioned if the westbound facet had remained open, it may have collapsed. Repairs may take not less than three months.
“Previous buildings are inclined to fail extra quickly as soon as they start to go,” mentioned RIDOT Director Peter Alviti. “On this case, our inspectors and our development engineers caught it earlier than it turned a disaster.”
The bridge closure led to huge visitors backups Tuesday, a few of which reached all the best way into Massachusetts.
