PFAS meeting, Health Fair & Parade: Six things to know in North Smithfield this week

Bridge/Canal Road closure

The Blackstone Division of Public Works is advising neighboring North Smithfield residents that Canal Road and the Bridge Road bridge will likely be closed for 3 weeks beginning as we speak, Monday, Could 19. The roadway from Most important Road to St. Paul Road will likely be closed for development with detours in place. These hoping to entry the Greenway/bike path parking space can accomplish that from St. Paul Road.

Water meeting

The Rhode Island Department of Health and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management will visit North Smithfield High School for a community meeting on the topic of PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in drinking water on Monday, May 19 in the auditorium of the school at 412 Greenville Road from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Those with private wells throughout northern Rhode Island are encouraged to attend and learn about resources available to protect their homes including an emerging contaminant grant program. Both sampling and remediation are funded by the EPA grant and will not cost anything for the private well owners. 

The meeting will include a question and answer session and no registration is needed to attend.

Pantry dates

The North Smithfield Food Pantry has announced that pickup dates in May will take place on Tuesdays, May 20 and 27 starting at 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays, May 24 and 31 starting 10 a.m.

The Food Pantry is open to North Smithfield residents who must have a photo ID and a bill that confirms their address. Guests can attend the pantry all open dates each month at the Slatersville Congregational Church UCC on the Common.

For the month of May, the pantry is seeking donations of Campbell soup, spaghetti sauce, and macaroni & cheese.

Health Fair

North Smithfield Elementary School at 2214 Providence Pike will hold a Health Fair on Thursday, May 22 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. with vendors, wellness products and services, fitness activities and exercise demos. The event is free and open to the community.

Memorial Day

City Corridor will likely be closed in observance of Memorial Day on Monday, Could 26, and trash and recycling choose up will likely be delayed by in the future for the rest of the week. There will likely be no yard waste choose up on the Saturday, Could 31.

The LeClair Kozlik Logan Bassett VFW Put up 6342 will even maintain its annual Memorial Day Parade beginning at 10:30 a.m. The parade will function the North Smithfield Excessive Faculty band, police and fireplace departments, Boy Scout troops, city officers, and veterans. The parade will proceed from Brigidos Market down North Most important Road to the Memorial City Constructing, the place VFW officers will conduct a Memorial ceremony at 11 a.m. The parade will then proceed down Faculty Road and finish on the pavilion behind Lindy’s Tavern at  98 Faculty St.  Following the parade, the VFW will supply a free collation on the pavilion.

City conferences

The North Smithfield Historic District Fee will maintain a gathering on Monday, Could 19 beginning at 6:30 p.m. within the Memorial City constructing at 1 Most important St. The agenda is here.

The North Smithfield City Council will maintain a gathering on Monday, Could 19 beginning at 6:45 p.m. at City Corridor at 83 Inexperienced St. The agenda is here.

The North Smithfield Faculty Committee will maintain a gathering on Tuesday, Could 20 beginning at 6:30 p.m. within the cafeteria of North Smithfield Center Faculty at 1850 Windfall Pike. The agenda is here.

The North Smithfield Sewer Fee will maintain a gathering on Wednesday, Could 21 beginning at 7 p.m. at City Corridor at 83 Inexperienced St. The agenda is here.

The North Smithfield Planning Board will maintain a public workshop concerning updates to the city’s zoning and subdivision rules on Thursday, Could 22 beginning at 6 p.m. at City Corridor at 83 Inexperienced St. The agenda is here.
