In a latest social media put up, the president of the Burrillville City Council, Don Fox, focused a member of the neighborhood who attended a  city council assembly for not reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. “I discover it despicable, and it reveals what he thinks about our nation,” mentioned Mr.Fox, and he then went on to invest causes he believed this individual shunned taking part. Mockingly, he mentioned this whereas encouraging extra individuals to attend city council conferences.

The Pledge of Allegiance has at all times been controversial in that some individuals interpret it as an announcement for – or towards – our nation. As a center faculty civics instructor for 30 years, I’ve taught my college students that talking out about authorities actions is a crucial freedom in our society. They perceive that it’s their proper to take part or chorus from taking part within the Pledge every morning. And so they most positively know it’s not a litmus check for patriotism to be weaponized with a purpose to assault residents with whom they don’t agree.  When a consultant of the city authorities assaults freedom of speech, it threatens the liberty of us all.

We’d be significantly better off having conversations, discovering our similarities, and utilizing them to bridge our variations than utilizing the Pledge of Allegiance as a software to assault these with whom we disagree.  That’s actual management.
